KolaDaisi University, Ibadan, [KDU-I], Oyo State, on Thursdays, matriculated 650 students into its various programmes for the 2024/2025 academic session.
Speaking during the ceremony, which was the eighth edition, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adeniyi Olatunbosun[SAN] urged students to use social media and artificial intelligence (AI) wisely in order to avoid its negative parts.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that 650 students were admitted in the 2024/2025 academic session.
The law professor urged the matriculating students to embrace excellence, saying the university plans to be a world-class institution.
Olatunbosun said: ‘’ As a student of KolaDaisi University, you have become our ambassadors. While on campus, at home, or at any public gathering, you must be positive representatives of the university. You must eschew bad behaviours and stay away from negative gangs. There are many immoralities among the youths of today. There is an uncanny and absurd tendency to get what you can not afford by all means. I plead with you to never be part of it. They have never brought peace to anyone; stay away from them.
“Social media has its benefits and also problems attached to it. The essence of social media is to serve as a platform for people to get information, to be well abreast of what is happening in our society, and also because it means communication.
‘’It is necessary. As much as it has its benefits, there are areas of problems and challenges, difficulties, and disadvantages. So, there is a need for every student to balance the mode of accessibility and the time of accessing social media. That should not be the preoccupation. But most of the time, it is better for them to balance their interaction on social media so as not to take over their valuable time. That means they must use it moderately and wisely within the context of their needs’’.
Also speaking, I am a scholar at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Adenike Akinjobi, who was the guest speaker, urged the students not to be distracted by the internet wisely and prudently.
The Department of English lecturer of UI said: ‘’Never forget the impact, positive and negative, that internet use may have on your studies and character. Commendably, the internet has made it possible to access knowledge and information from all over the world. Regrettably, the internet has become a major distraction and even a danger to your generation. Therefore, explore its vast resources for academic purposes and use them maximally for your knowledge enrichment. However, watch where the internet lures you. Avoid the dark side that lures to perdition.
‘’I urge you to use social media reasonably. While social media can be a powerful tool for connection and learning, excessive and frivolous use can be a distraction that might hinder your academic progress.
‘’Today, the access to technology tools such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) has almost halted critical and analytical thinking. Creativity is getting eroded, and humanity seems to be crushing itself with inventions. Take the opportunity of your education to make a meaningful impact by contributing to a world that is fairer and more compassionate’’.
